Blueberry Picking Tips and Info

Gigantic Maine blueberry from bluberry picking in southern Maine at Estes Berry Farm

Welcome to Estes Berry Farm, where blueberry picking in southern Maine is a fun and rewarding experience for the whole family. To help you make the most of your visit, here are some handy tips and tricks for a successful blueberry picking adventure.

  • Pick from Different Angles: Blueberries can hide in the foliage, so try picking from different angles to ensure you don’t miss the best berries.
  • Use Two Hands: Use one hand to hold the branch and the other to pick the berries. This technique helps you pick more efficiently and prevents damage to the plants.
  • Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water, especially on hot days. Wearing hats and sunglasses can also help protect you from the sun.
  • Bring Wipes: Having wipes on hand is useful for cleaning your hands before getting back into your car.
  • Wear Appropriate Shoes: Avoid flip-flops, as they can get caught in the grass. Sturdy shoes or sneakers are a better choice.
  • Leave Dogs at Home: For safety reasons, please leave your dogs at home. The weather can get very hot, and we don’t want them left in cars. Only certified service animals are allowed on the farm.
  • Keep an Eye on Little Kids: Our farm has several irrigation ponds near the blueberry fields. Please keep young children within sight at all times to ensure their safety.
  • Make it Fun with Friends: Invite friends for a fun day out and have a friendly competition to see who can pick the most blueberries!

Once you’ve picked your blueberries, follow these steps to clean, store, and enjoy them at their best.

  1. Wait Until You’re Ready to Eat: Blueberries are best washed just before you plan to eat or use them. Washing them too early can cause them to spoil faster.
  2. Use Cold Water: Rinse the blueberries in cold water. Avoid using soap or detergent.
  3. Gently Dry: After washing, gently pat the blueberries dry with a clean towel or paper towels.
  • Refrigeration: Store fresh blueberries in the refrigerator in a breathable container. Avoid airtight containers, which can trap moisture and cause the berries to spoil.
  • Freezing: To freeze blueberries, spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet and place them in the freezer. Once frozen, transfer the blueberries to a freezer-safe bag or container. Your blueberries can be stored in the freezer for up to a year.
